Candle and Flag

Candle and Flag for the Fallen

In cooperation with the National Insurance Institute - Hostile Action Casualties Division.

Placing a candle and a flag on the graves of fallen IDF soldiers and victims of acts of hostility: a joint initiative of the CYMI, the Ministry of Defense and the National Insurance Institute.

Before Remembrance Day for Fallen Soldiers and Victims of Hostilities, members of youth movements mobilize for the initiative - placing the flag of Israel and a Yizkor (memorial) candle on the graves of the fallen. This initiative reflects an educational-value process: youth movement members learn the personal stories of the fallen, and in some cases even meet bereaved families before the Remembrance Day.

Hundreds of youth movement members from the senior age groups visit military and civilian cemeteries throughout Remembrance Day week. They find the graves of the fallen (based on information received from the Defense Ministry Unit for Commemorating Fallen Soldiers and from the National Insurance Institute Hostile Action Casualties Division) and place a small flag and a candle on each grave.

Youth movement counselors and members describe with excitement the initiative, hearing the stories of soldiers and civilians and the touching meetings with the bereaved families.
